Greener Past

I saw California
Through the dust of a four lane headed west
I recall how it glittered gold
In my greener past

And you had a diamond
With gleam of a distant catcher’s mask
And the flash of a small white ball
In your greener past

We stood in our places
With confident young faces
Posing for that picture of the class
Bound and determined, shooting for the moon
Two chips from the same rose colored glass

My band hit the highway
And my ride to the top ran out of gas
All the numbers were in the red
In my greener past

Two seams and the rosin
That was all in the world you tried to grasp
But it slipped through the old brown glove
In your greener past

We stood in our places
With confident young faces
Posing for that picture of the class
Bound and determined, shooting for the moon
Two chips from the same rose colored glass

So here’s to a brother
And the lives that were meant for us at last
And the dreams that were wild and blue
In our greener past
In the greener pastures
In the greener pastures of the past
